Northwest Missouri edges Mustangs
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — No. 19 Northwest Missouri State made a slim 2-1 doubles margin stand up for a 5-4 win over Midwestern State on Friday afternoon.
The Bearcats (10-2) claimed the top two doubles positions as Calvin Peterson and Vijit Sehgal outlasted MSU’s Vjekoslav Stipanic and Luke Joyce 8-6 at No. 1, while Malcolm Harrison and Daniel Quesada upended Bo Zaputovic and Mario Urban 8-3 at No. 2.
The Mustangs (10-3) scored a win at No. 3 as Jarrod Liston and Chad Meeks doubled up Northwest Missouri’s Philip Hultquist and Giovanni Auricchio 8-4 to pull MSU within 2-1 going into singles play.
Only two singles matches were decided in straight sets.
Harrison defeated Urban 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 and MSU’s Zaputovic ousted Hultquist 6-1, 6-3.
The rest of the four matches were settled in third-set tiebreakers with Mustangs notching a mild upset at No. 2 where Stipanic edged Patterson 5-7, 7-6, 10-5.
Midwestern also claimed the No. 6 match as Tiago Vilarinho defeated Auricchio 2-6, 6-3, 10-8, but the Mustangs couldn’t find another win to overcome its deficit at the end of doubles’ play.
Midwestern State returns to action at 3 p.m. Tuesday, hosting Tyler Junior College.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women’s tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches on Friday in a 6-1 victory over Weber State at the Rams’ University Tennis Complex.
In a historic match, CSU held its first dual competition at its new home venue, a $2 million facility that will host the Mountain West’s tennis championships April 27-30. The Rams also continued their spring-break momentum going into next week’s conference opener, extending their winning streak to three. CSU has now won five of its last six matches and now holds a season record of 7-5 (0-0 MWC). Weber State is now 3-6 (2-1 BSC).
“It is important that we have built confidence coming into the conference schedule,” said Head Coach Jon Messick. “Conference teams are tough and if we go into that with some losses, that makes it harder, so I think we are right where we need to be.”
Current Mountain West Player of the Week Melissa Holzinger extended her winning streak, winning in singles, 6-0, 6-2, and in doubles with partner Veronika Wojakowska, 8-0. With her victory over Weber State, Holzinger has wins in five of her last six matches.
CSU took an early lead in doubles as the Rams swept the Wildcats 3-0, notching the dual’s first point.
In singles, Lauren Mulhern assured the Rams victory when she denied Annika Karlsen at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3, giving CSU a 4-0 lead over Weber State.
Mulhern, Wojakowska and Kaley Schultz each extended their winning streaks to three games as they notched wins in the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 singles positions, respectively.
In doubles to begin the afternoon, a Wojakowska volley put away the first doubles tilt, as the CSU junior and Holzinger needed a little more than 30 minutes to sweep Kristi Russell and Nittaya Phonharath, 8-0. Shortly after, Mulhern and Schultz clinched the doubles team point for the Rams with an 8-3 victory over Annika Karlsen and Michelle Warwick. Then, Caitlin Fluegge’s smash backhand return finished off her Wildcats doubles opponents, Naseem Eslami and Brittiny Moore, putting an exclamation point on an 8-3 triumph, with partner Tori Arneson.
“This is probably the best we have played all year, top to bottom,” said Messick of the competition, which lasted just two hours, 40 minutes. “This was the best match of the year as far as consistency and competitive level.”
Because the dual had already been decided by Mulhern’s win, the final two matches were settled in a tie-breaking third frame instead of a full set.
Fluegge came out victorious in her tie-breaking third set against Eslami, after falling in the second set. Fluegge won 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (3).
Closing out the dual for CSU was Arneson as she fell in a tie-breaking third set, 6-4, 4-6, 0-1 (2), the Rams’ sole loss in the dual.
In a breast cancer awareness-themed match, the Rams sported pink uniforms and held a pink lunch for all fans prior to the competition. Colorado State also raised just over $450 that will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
In a pre-match program, Pat Reed from the Komen Foundation, which also services Larimer County, spoke to the audience. A two-time survivor of breast cancer, Reed wore a button that read 1 in 8, representing the national statistics that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, although the numbers grow to one in seven in Colorado.
“I thought that all the pregame events today were very touching,” said Messick. “It made our first dual match on the new courts really special.”
CSU also welcomed Gayle Spear and Teresa Roudell, two courageous women currently fighting breast cancer.
Up next for the Rams:
Colorado State will travel to Las Vegas, Nev., next week for two matches to kick off their Mountain West schedule, against San Diego State (April 1) and UNLV (April 2).

Men’s Tennis Falls to No. 10 Illinois, 7-0
Mar 26th
March 25, 2011
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Penn State men’s tennis team (10-9, 0-2) had its four-match winning streak snapped against No. 10 Illinois (10-6, 2-0) Friday afternoon. With a victory in first doubles, senior Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia) broke the Penn State career doubles victories record with his 79th doubles victory.
The Nittany Lions started slowly, dropping two of three doubles matches and falling behind 1-0. Sophomore Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas) and junior Christopher Hasyn (Lansdale, Pa.) could not overcome a fast start by Dennis Nevolo and Roy Kalmanovich, dropping third doubles, 8-2. Bourchier and freshman Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) then dominated Johnny Hamui and Brian Alden in the No. 1 doubles bout, 8-4, to earn the Nittany Lions lone victory on the afternoon. Bourchier passed Michael James’ career doubles victories record with the win. Finally, in second doubles, Abe Souza and Stephen Hoh defeated junior Jason Lee (Sydney, Australia) and sophomore C.J. Griffin (Portland, Mich.), 8-5, to claim the doubles point for the Illini.
After falling behind 1-0, the Nittany Lions looked to turn their fortunes around in singles play. Bourchier could not overcome ITA No. 7 ranked Nevolo in first singles (6-1, 6-3), giving Illinois an early 2-0 lead. Welnetz met an equally tough challenge in Kalmanovich. The Texan fell in third singles (6-2 6-3), increasing the deficit to 3-0.
Illinois secured a fourth point and the match in sixth singles as Bruno Abdelnour (No. 64) beat back freshman Chris Young (Melbourne, Australia), 6-1, 6-2.
Once the match had been decided, Hasyn fell to Souza (6-2, 6-3) to widen the margin to 5-0. Lee then dropped the first set against Hamui (No. 78), 6-2. He made a valiant comeback effort in the second set before eventually falling and dropping the second singles bout (6-2, 6-4).
Bader provided the Nittany Lions with a spirited effort in fourth singles, pushing both sets to a tie breaker. He eventually went on to drop both tiebreakers in heart breaking fashion, falling to Hoh and clinching a sweep for Illinois (7-6 (5), 7-6 (3)).

Miami Tennis Masters: Draw Bursts Open for Another Novak Djokovic Surge
Mar 25th
The Sony Ericsson Open, the second of the two giant North American Masters, is a conclusive full stop between tennis’s first hard court season and the arrival of two unbroken months of clay.
And while the opening week of April may see a handful of players make their transition to the red stuff in Casablanca or Houston—the only ATP event in the U.S. on clay—the spotlight turns unwaveringly on Europe for the duration.
As if to celebrate this last hard-court jamboree until the U.S. Open Series gets underway in mid-July, the 300,000-plus Florida visitors throw themselves into what is surely the brightest and breeziest tournament of the year.
The players, too, love this event and soak up diversions from diving with dolphins to strutting their stuff on the fashion runway.
The temperature might swelter from a night-time in the 60s to a daytime approaching the 90s, and with a humidity that can drench the forehead like a wet sponge.
However, Miami has been voted the players’ favorite Masters tournament six times.
And to prove its popularity, all the best men are here.
Every one of the top 10, 18 of the top 20—Gael Monfils and David Nalbandian are both injured—and 46 of the top 50 players fill the 96-man draw, including the last five champions.
Andy Roddick, defending champion, won the title in 2004 as well. Roger Federer is also a double winner, in 2005 and 2006. Andy Murray won in 2009 and his friend, Novak Djokovic, is aiming to win his second Miami title—the first was in 2007.
Djokovic is also bidding to become the only active player apart from Federer to win Indian Wells and Miami back-to-back.
Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal has just as big an incentive. He has twice been runner-up in Miami, in 2005 and 2008. Can he make it third time lucky?

Judge sentences Aspen man, 74, in tiff at tennis club
Mar 25th
Calling it “the most embarrassing thing in my whole career,” an Aspen man pleaded no contest Wednesday to disorderly conduct for getting in a tennis-court scuffle with a fellow member at the Maroon Creek Club.
Longtime Aspen real estate developer Steve Marcus, 74, was given a six-month deferred sentence by Municipal Judge Brooke Peterson, and must undergo anger-management sessions.
Maroon Creek Club member Joseph Sloves, 70, told police that on Oct. 5, a group of at least seven players were waiting for court assignments at the exclusive club, when Sloves bounced a ball off his racquet toward a group of players and said “let’s get started,” according to a police report.
“The ball hit Marcus in the head, Marcus was surprised. Sloves said Marcus started to use vile language and yell at Sloves. Sloves said he slowly walked up to Marcus and in a calm manner tried to apologize. Sloves claimed Marcus continued to verbally assault Sloves. Marcus punched Sloves in the chest.

Serena Williams: Is Her New Video Game Ad Too Sexy for Television?
Mar 25th
Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images
Serena Williams may not be sporting what many call “too sexy’ outfits on the tennis court any time soon, but that is not preventing her from wearing them in a commercial.
In a new advertisement promoting a new video game, Williams is dressed up in an outfit that would not exactly be rated G nowadays. I’m actually not even sure if a PG rating would suffice.
Shari Weiss of the Daily News says that “There’s no question that Serena Williams is a good looking woman. But some even think the tennis star is a bit too hot for TV.
At least that’s the case for her new ad for Top Spin 4, a tennis game made for Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.”
The commercial lasts one minute, and features Williams dressed in a black leather outfit with stockings as “The World’s Sexiest Tennis Player,” going head to head with actress Rileah Vanderbilt, who is dressed very similarly and described at “The World’s Sexiest Tennis Gamer.”
Weiss goes on to write that “The video is cut with clips from the actual game, as if the two women were playing each other. But combined with grunting sounds that are more commonly heard in the bedroom than on the tennis court, the hotness factor goes up several levels.”
In the end, Williams appears on the screen and says “You realize this is a fantasy, right?”
Reportedly, the ad was rejected by the video game’s maker – 2K Sports – but it was released on YouTube by Vanderbilt, and has since gone viral.
After suffering a pulmonary embolism, Williams will not return to the courts any time soon. But that certainly has not stopped her from causing controversy with the choice of her outfits.

Navy Women’s Tennis Starts League Play With Two Weekend Matches
Mar 25th
March 25, 2011
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women’s tennis team begins Patriot League play this weekend when it hosts a pair of league matches at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex. The Mids will battle Colgate at 2:30 pm on Saturday before taking on Bucknell at 10:00 am on Sunday. Admission to both matches is free.
Navy enters with a 15-9 dual-meet record after defeating Morgan State on Wednesday, 7-0. Colgate begins the weekend with a 3-8 mark while Bucknell is 5-8 heading into Saturday’s match at George Mason. Colgate was selected fourth in the Patriot League preseason poll while Navy and Bucknell tied for second. The Bison handed Navy two of its four losses a year ago, including a 4-1 decision in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals which ended Navy’s inaugural season.
“We are looking forward to starting conference play. We expect the matches to be competitive and intense and we are excited to start league play,” said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. “These matches will be a good indication of where we are. We have been working hard and have played a lot of matches and I think we are ready for the weekend.”
Navy enters the weekend having won four of its last six matches after enduring a stretch where it lost three straight duals. Over the last six matches, Navy has won 22 of its 36 singles matches but just eight of 15 doubles matches.
Darien Sears (Fr. / Silver Spring, Md.) and Erin Snook (Fr. / Tampa, Fla.) continue to pace Navy with 18 victories, the most in a season in school history. Sears, who holds down the No. 4 spot typically, owns a 10-6 dual-meet record, while Snook, who plays at No. 5, is 12-6 in dual action. Amanda Griffin (Sr. / Roseville, Calif.) is 16-14 overall and is 9-9 at No. 1 singles. Dye Das (So. / Cherry Hill, N.J.) is also 11-6 overall and boasts an outstanding 8-2 dual-meet record. Her 26 career wins rank second all-time behind Brittney Boucher’s (Sr. / San Antonio, Texas) 27-15 record. Boucher is 13-8 this year and 8-4 in dual-meet action, mostly at No. 6 singles.
Navy is just 33-32 as a team in doubles play during the spring. Navy’s primary doubles tandems include Griffin and Snook at No. 1 doubles (5-10 overall / 4-9 dual), Emani Decquir (So. / Sacramento, Calif.) and Stefanie Ton (So. / Milpitas, Calif.) at No. 2 doubles (10-15 overall / 6-9 dual) and Boucher and Sears at No. 3 doubles (9-11 overall / 5-8 dual).
The matches will be the first of four straight Patriot League duals as the Mids head to the Lehigh Valley to face Lafayette (April 2, 10:30 am, Easton, Pa.) and Lehigh (April 3, 2:00 pm, Bethlehem, Pa.) next weekend. Navy will have just two more home matches vs. Bryant and Norfolk State on April 9, before hosting the Patriot League Tournament on April 22-24 in Annapolis.

Iowa men’s tennis anxious to play after successful spring trip
BY BEN ROSS | MARCH 25, 2011 7:20 AM
This weekend marks the kickoff of the Big Ten tennis season for the Hawkeyes — they will compete against Ohio State (16-2) and Penn State (10-8) at home. No. 66 Iowa will face the No. 5 Buckeyes today and Penn State on March 27 at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex.
Ohio State comes off of a 6-1 win over Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif., earlier in the week, and the Hawkeyes will try to continue the success they had on the spring trip to Florida last week. There, they went 2-1 while trying to acclimate from playing indoors to outdoors.
Scouting the competition, it appears Iowa will have all it can handle facing Ohio State. The Buckeyes have the No. 5 and 19 singles players in the nation in Blaz Rola and Chase Buchanan. The squad is strong at doubles as well, with the pairing of Matt Allare and Peter Kobelt owning the No. 14 ranking in the nation. Even though the Hawkeyes will play such a highly ranked opponent, sophomore Garret Dunn believes the Hawkeyes remain unfazed.
“They’re just a bunch of college kids like us,” he said. “Rankings don’t mean anything. The match against Illinois a couple weeks ago proved we’re as good as any team in the nation. Rankings don’t mean anything once you get on the court, and I think all the guys think that.”
This week, the squad would normally start practicing outdoors in order to get ready for the remainder of the season. But because of the recent drop in temperature, the Hawkeyes will continue sharpening their skills indoors until the weather warms up. One may not think the atmosphere in which tennis is played affects the game, but the differences can be as significant as playing football on grass as opposed to turf, or perhaps even more substantial than that.
Among the players, competing outdoors or indoors remains a matter of preference.
“I prefer indoors; I have a flat game,” junior Will Vasos said. “I can hit more winners indoors, whereas outside it’s more of grinding and loopy balls. If you have a big serve, it’s a bigger weapon indoors. [The play] is more aggressive indoors, and outside you’re going to have to grind and have 30-ball rallies. It’s harder to get winners outdoors.”
Assistant tennis coach Steve Nash doesn’t believe his squad has any type of advantage or disadvantage playing outside or inside, and he said the team can excel regardless of the climate it plays in.
“Indoor tennis is much faster,” he said. “Typically, teams that serve bigger do well. You also don’t have the heat or wind to deal with, so teams that can grind longer do well outdoors. We have tried to recruit a certain number of guys who are very good outdoors, a few who are very good indoors, and a few who do both well.”
The Hawkeyes will have to be nearly perfect against a Buckeye squad that has no glaring weaknesses and has only posted two losses on the season, but the assistant coach is confident.
“Whenever you play a good team, you got to serve well and get free points,” Nash said. “If you have to grind out every single point, that’s tough. Serving is probably the biggest key for [Ohio State], and that would be very similar to every Big Ten match we play. We have to get enough free points so we do not have to scramble for every single point, and if we do that, our guys are going to beat anyone.”

2011 Boys Tennis Season Preview: Bulldogs’ 4 seniors to lead young, talented group
Mar 25th
CARROLL — Bloom-Carroll boys tennis coach Rick Rowland decided to hang a banner for his team’s runner-up finish in the Mid-State League in 2010.
It’s not the norm to put up second-place banners, he said, but he did it to remind his younger players to aim high.
“We put one up on the fence near our courts there to kind of let everyone know what we aspire to,” Rowland said. “They know the seniors have been through this, and the young guys look up to them.”
The Bulldogs return a core of four seniors — Matt Mendoza, Drew Destocki, Jacob Bowman and Chris Workman — who are all multiyear letterwinners.
“I think the core group is going to hold its own this year,” Mendoza said. “We definitely have our work cut out for us, but I think we can rise to the occasion and be successful.”
Rowland’s roster will be a mix of the aforementioned senior leadership, and a handful of hungry young players looking to make the leap to varsity success.
Mendoza and Destocki were a combined 7-1 in MSL singles play in 2010. The pair figures to rotate between the Nos. 1 and 2 singles spots again this season.
Meanwhile, sophomore Matt Yates devoted plenty of time in the summer to improving his game with teammate Colt Thompson. Yates, who was honorable mention selection in the MSL in 2010, will play No. 3 singles.
Thompson will pair with freshman Daniel Danford at No. 2 doubles.
“Last year was a great year because we had the younger kids learn the basics,” Mendoza said. “I really think they’ll step up and do well this season.”
Rowland said Destocki and Bowman have become almost like player-coaches, helping to run drills in practice and teaching the youngest on Bloom-Carroll’s roster the ins and outs of the game.
“They look up to all four of those guys for leadership, guidance and little things,” Rowland said. “They can coach them on what groundstrokes they need to hit in a certain spot or things like that.”
Bowman and Workman figure to be a formidable pair at No. 1 doubles for the Bulldogs. Bowman was a first-team All-MSL selection in 2010.
Mendoza said with the seniors leading the way, his team will look to match or better its success from a season ago.
“I’m definitely confident in this group,” Mendoza said. “I’ve known them for awhile now, and they come out and work hard every match.”
